I think we live in the greatest country, I really do. America has freedoms that other countries can only dream about and freedoms I take for granted without realizing. As cheesy as it sounds, yes, I would die for my country if I ever had too. Though for the life of me (no pun intended) I don't know why the fate of America would fall on my shoulders and depending on if I lived or died, but hey, if it ever did come down to that you can rest assure that I would gladly give up my life for my country (and my hubby and my kids).
But America does have some issues. To me, the answers seem clear, but I'm not in congress and haven't a clue how to get there. I mean, I know I pull a Sarah Palin and get involved in the PTA which would lead itself to my local council and so on and so on... but I don't wanna. I just want to get elected Right. Now. to something that would put me in a position now to help America be as great as it should be.
We are in crisis mode folks, the cost of EVERYTHING is rising and yet our paychecks are staying the same and when your healthcare goes up and your paycheck stays the same, you actually are getting paid less. Yes, in January of '08 my paycheck went down $70 bucks a paycheck because of healthcare. That $70 is equal to $1,960.00 a year. We were supposed to get a 2% step increase in July. We did not get that step. I know I'm not alone.
I pay out of every check to for me and family to be covered by health insurance. Earlier this year I had to have surgery and Emily had a 3 day hospital stay. On top of the crap I pay out of my check monthly-which is about $600 a month ($7,200 A FREAKING YEAR); I now am sitting on about $3,000 worth of hospital bills. Yeah, the hospital will get their money when they get it, I'm in no rush to pay them because ya know, I have a mortgage, food, gas... all of which is going up at alarming rates- well expect for my mortgage. I did not get one of those adjustable rate mortgages.
America needs a change, a major change... I for one think it all starts with the healthcare costs. This year alone I will pay over $10,000 for healthcare. That $10,000 does not include dentist appointments or eye exams. I know my cousin's family is in the same boat, though they pay a bit more because I am fortunate enough to work at a company that employs over 2,000 people therefore giving us a bigger healthcare cost discount than other companies. My mom, the same boat... so between my family, my cousin's family and my mom we pay roughly $30,000 in healthcare premiums and that does not include the deductibles, co pays and 20% we are left to pay after the healthcare company is done paying on our behalf.... ARE YOU KIDDING ME!
I pay for the healthcare cost for my family because I get the bigger discount between Paul and I's jobs. My cousin's husband pays for their healthcare cost and my mom pays for her... that is 3 people paying $30,000 or more a year just to say, "Yes I have healthcare." How ridiculous is that? We have people that can't pay their mortgage payments yet, we are paying this much in healthcare costs. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! It makes me sick.
If you times what I pay a year for my mortgage and divide it by 1/2, I pay more than half of my mortgage for healthcare costs. So in a sense, I work for my house and healthcare. Yay Me.
I know we don't want healthcare to be a government thing because whenever the government gets involved things have a way of messing up, I understand. However, there are things that the government deems as an American right that all American's have access to...
Police Protection
Fire Department Rescue
Ambulance Rescue
The use of 911
Your child MUST get an education
I do not have a choice what electric company I use, or my gas and water company. BUT I have to pay those bills each month or they, the government, can say that my house isn't suitable for me to live in and kick me out.
My state government tells me if my drinking water is ok enough to drink.
My grass has to be mowed or my local government will come mow it for me at the cost of about $1,000 bucks and put a lien on my house if I don't pay the bill.
The government makes sure all of American's pay for our tags on our car or we can be fined.
My point is that the government makes sure we as American's do this and do that to make sure and we have to play by their rules or we have steep fines to pay, yet Healthcare isn't a God Give American Right? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? The government will make sure that my child has the right to an education till she is 18, yet she does not have the right to free healthcare?
My government makes sure that if I'm in a car accident, the police, fire and ambulance will come as quickly as they can to save my life, but yet once I'm out of the hospital it's all on me to pay the bills... hell, with medical bills like these, just let me die.
My government makes sure it gets my tax money before I even get my paycheck, yet it can't make sure that I get the proper medical attention should I find a lump in my breast. Nope, that one is all on me and my checkbook, but the goverment got my money.
My government makes sure that the pot holes in the road on my way to work get fixed with the proper asphalt, yet if I break my leg walking to work- I'm on my own.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!?!?
I pay over $7,000 just for a few checkups, a few sore throats and throw in an ear infection or two... but when I need I really need that $7,000 to cover my surgery or Emily's hospital stay I'm on my own. This isn't right.
It should be our God Given American Right that we have free healthcare for every single American with a social security card.
Seriously, I'd give my government that $10,000 I'm paying Cigna and then NEVER have another bill from the hospital, surgeon, and 'band aid put it on' person, or clerk who had to type my name a few times... really... I would give my government that $10,000 to never have to worry about another bill from any hospital or doctor. I think my social security card SHOULD be my health insurance card. If you don't have a social security card, then you don't have healthcare.
I'm just sick of it. We need a fix. We need rid of all healthcare companies and start completely over.
I’m just so pissed right now. Yesterday when I came home I saw a "foreclosure" sign on a house in my neighborhood, the first sign like that to go up in my neighborhood. I used to wave at this family in the mornings. I took my kids to that house for trick or treating on Halloween. And it just hit home. I saw so many more with the 'For Sale by Owner' signs. People are just trying to get out from under there mortgages right now... but yet if they are still working, I am sure the freakin' healthcare company is getting their $7,000+ a year... a family can be homeless, no biggie but damn them if they lose their healthcare coverage.
It is our right to demand healthcare for ever American with a social security card. If you show up at a hospital without a social security card, well then I don't mind seeing America go into $700 billion debt shipping those people back to whence they came from.
Like I said, I'm just pissed and want to move to Canada right now.
AND if you have the time, here is an excellent post to ponder...

And on a lighter note....
For Becky, This is one of the best video's ever! Love it too- it's too funny!. And ya know, this is kinda the way I'm feeling about America and Healthcare, Mortgages, and Gas Prices right now- just really, really pissed but more disappointed that our government thinks so low of us that working American's don't have the same right to medical care as someone who is in prison for killing his kids- we, US WORKING LAW ABIDING AMERICAN'S, just deserve better. Don't we?

As you know, I deal with the health care crisis on a daily basis, both at home and at work. You and I have talked about this before and you know where I stand and where I believe action should take place. Health care is my major "soapbox" issue, but I won't hijack your blog with my comment:)If the gov't starts to tax the money we pay for health insurance, my take home pay will decrease even more, everything else will increase, with the exception of my check. I figured out last night what the approx. dollar amount would be, and it was significant. I can't afford to have more money be taken away from me.
I knew that you'd love the video! It's so damn funny and I laugh every time I see it!!
Yeah I agree health care and there cost are out of control. I think if we have to pay x amount then we shouldn't have to pay co fees or anything else! Having to pay the co-pay on top of the charges that are taken out of each check has hindered me from going to the doctors. It has been 3yrs since I had a "female" exam. I am suppose to have one once a yr because I had pre-cancerous cells one time and they told me that it could come back. I am scared to death that it may come back but because they $20 me to death I just haven't gone! I would rather not go to the doctors for me in case my kids need to go. I wonder how many Americans are for going their health for the health of their children. I know chuck and I are 2. I agree with you that something needs to be done, it is getting out of control with everything. Chuck and I have seriously considered moving to England! Hasta La Vista America!
Since Becky won't hijack your comments, I will! :)
It's a sad, sad day when a country that was once the greatest place in the world, a country that people have shipped their kids to just so that they'd have the opportunity to have a better life, is now turning into a freaking charity case country.
Give me your tired, your broken, your weary, etc etc. BUT PLEASE make sure that they will, at some point, learn to love our country and contribute towards its greatness rather than sucking it dry by working the system.
Thank you for clarifying that only SOCIAL SECURITY CARD HOLDERS should have access to these programs.
You know how I feel about all of this though - scrap the welfare system and make people start being accountable for themselves; build the highest fucking fence you can and pitch all of the people who have snuck across the border a swift kick right over it.
With all of the programs we have in place to help those down on their luck, why the hell are their homeless people sleeping in the alley behind my work, begging for change? Every corner I come to has one or more people looking for a hand out - which is kinda funny because there is a Christian-run homeless shelter ten blocks from here. They want your money, your pity and your food but they won't go to a place that will dry up any bad habits, give them clothes, food and shelter and job training.
It is time to make people accountable!! I don't care what color you are or how much money you make. Just because you are a so-called minority doesn't mean that you should have the restrictions loosened on the mortgage requirements so that you can be a home owner. Thank you Bill Clinton Administration for forcing Fannie and Freddie to do that - they've been ruined. Now the Bush Administration is being blamed for it and everything they are doing to try and fix this crap is being ridiculed and no one is standing up and saying "Hey, Bill Clinton started this mess." Let's give credit where credit is due for the state of our economy, okay?
And please, don't get me started on this war.
I don't have time to go through and make sure I don't sound like the worlds biggest bitch so anything that sounds like I'm being a douche to you, please don't it personally, okay?? Love you bunches and bunches!
Becky- I think Pink is my new BFF thanks to this video. Hummm... I wonder if SHE will hang up on me and make my nose leak many fluids. Oh I kid, I kid... you know I LOVE YOU!!!!
Twingly- I won't go to England, but Canada for sure!
Shelia- There you go again on your soapbox hurting my feelings... Oh I kid I kid with you too!! I agree with what you said, however, and don't kill me, I think that Bush has had 8 years slow down the housing mess and he just let it continue because it did look good for America, all these people becoming home owners. Bush is suppose to be surrounded by some of the world’s most brilliant minds that could see this mess coming a million miles away and NOW we are having to do a bailout?? But I guess he was still consulting with the brilliant minds that were sure of the WMD's in Iraq. It's ok, you can totally hate me now. LOL ... I just think that with the mess we are in right now, there is more than enough blame to go around and the first person I want to blame is Alan Greenspan. He kept cutting interest rates when there wasn't a need for it and this housing mess was predicted years ago when he kept lowering interest rates when it wasn't needed. The market got over inflated and I don't blame Clinton or Bush as much as I blame Alan Greenspan, but I do blame Bush for having 8 years to slow down this train wreck and not having done it. Ok... going to hide behind a big rock now so that I can be somewhat protected from the shrapnel, LOL
Thank you for the link love and I do hope that things get better down there. It's a complicated situation and I'm certainly no expert, but know that this Canadian Mama is routing for you and other American families.
Karen- Thank you :-)
I say this with all the love in the world. "You're a punk." YOU SO MADE MY HEART STOP BECAUSE I THOUGHT YOU WERE MAD AT ME!! LOL
Alan Greenspan - stupid me. Thank you for giving me someone else to hate! lol You are so right about that! Thank you for a new perspective on this issue. So so so so TRUE!
A bazillion kudos to you m'dear
I just cancled my lovely blue cross, cause I couldn't afford it anymore. It went up almost 100 dollars in a year to 560 a month. Aetna? No not an option, over 600 a month.
Oh let me point out, that is not for a family of 2, 3 or 4. No that is for a single person. Please, you got to pay more to have your spouse and kids covered!
Oh and if your gay, palease! Yes you can be covered in Jersey, but any benefits you get are income and taxes. Welcome to my world McCain voters. Most of you are going to see how much the "private" health care sector sucks compared to what you could get at a job that offers it, or you had on mommy and daddy's plan before you got too old.
Oh and need I say with that fee I was paying , you only get half of your prescription costs covered. Dental? Please, do you expect that for free? No dental is not included, I hope you have good teeth, and so do your kids.
I do have health care mind you, I just had to find other, which means a few less benefits, but whatever. It's better then nothing. Oh been there done that on an ER visit! I'm not stupid, I know if I don't have health care and go to the ER and can't pay my bill . . . oh yeah, the rest of America pays it for me with the increase in their premiums next year. Hmmmm . . . .
Sheila,
The problem I see over and over with many is that the are blaming the poor or the minorities for the housing crises. I keep seeing this over and over, in chat rooms, in forums.
Hi yeah, let me give you a tour of my neighborhood, where money is what matters. It's where people who could by a nice decent house in one neighborhood, but instead by the giant one in another that requires a loan. Oh did I mention that they can't afford to furnish once they move in? No joke, rooms left baren cause they have no money left. No wonder it gets sold a year later. Let's not talk about the 3+ cars they don't need in the driveway.
Hi yeah, let me give you a tour of my mom's neighborhood, where people buy that nice modest house and tear it down to put up a McMansion. What was wrong with the old house? Nothing, it was probably built better too. It just wasn't BIG enough, cause in America bigger is better.
Yes, the rich are just as capable of living beyond their means as the poor. Just ask MC Hammer :)
Dustin - I agree with you 100% that people who are intentionally living beyond their means are just as much to blame as the lower income brackets. Anyone who knows me though can tell you that I have a tendency to go off on tangents and forget to finish my point. It's a major character flaw that I'm working on. In my posts I have the ability to save, edit, etc. However, in comments I don't. I'm not a professional writer, nor a political genius, so sometimes my point gets lost somewhere along the way.
I think it is ridiculous that health care premiums are so freakin' high. I think it is ridiculous that same sex couples are not afforded the same rights as other couples.
It is not my intention to ever sound like some cold hearted jerk who is blaming all of our problems on the poor, etc. However, I think we can all agree that the welfare system is completely broken.
I think we can all agree that we'll never 100% agree with a candidate. I also think we can all agree that sometimes you have to weigh your options and choose which issue is most important to you. Sometimes, unfortunately, we have to sacrifice one personal belief in order to uphold a belief that is so close to your heart that you could never vote against it, or, in my case, FOR it.
